Sam Jayne

Sam Jayne is an art director and designer based in Los Angeles, CA. His approach to design is an exercise where research, concept, and aesthetic share equal weight and culminate in output with purpose and utility.

He has worked as the art director for MIT Technology Review and Axios. Before that, he was the lead designer at a firm in Arlington, VA where he worked on branding and marketing for DARPA. Sam received his Bachelor of Arts in graphic design from Susquehanna University in 2009.

He runs a small apparel brand named JAMstore as an extension of his design practice and has a dog named Oliver.

Share your life story in six words:
Hi. Graphic design is my passion.

When was your first brush with science?
My mom was an earth science teacher, so we had a lot of conversations about science when I was growing up.

Why do you think bacteria are important?
How could organisms that exist all around us and within us not be relevant?

How do you define science?
A quest for understanding our existence.

How do you define health
A state of well-being.

What are you currently reading / listening to / watching?
I’m reading The Human Superorganism and Random Family and listening to Mark Barrott.

Favorite microbiome-nurturing food?
Olives

Microbiome perturbation you’re working on:
I probably eat a bit too much sugar.
