At BeachMint, David was responsible for cost-effective acquisition of all new members by testing, scaling, and growing various advertising channels including social, search, display, affiliate, partnerships, and influencer collaborations.
David started coding when he started elementary school and began his career as an engineer when he was a freshman in highschool. He brings nearly a lifetime of coding, design, and UX experience to his work. Fun Fact: He created Glowsticking.com in 2001, which resulted in a worldwide community and a DVD that was available on Netflix. As an industry thought leader and expert, David has educated founders and executives on advertising, digital, e-commerce, brand loyalty, and growth strategy through platforms and communities like General Assembly and the National Retail Federation. When he’s offline, David loves running, basketball, and hiking—mostly as an antidote to his even greater love of fine food.
In conversation with David:
Share your life story in six words: Constantly learning, always questioning, forever curious.
What was your first brush with science? When I was 8, a relative showed me how to wrap a screw with a long piece of electrical wire from a battery, which made it electromagnetic. Within a few days, I figured out how to build a switch and created multiple electromagnetics using multiple screws hanging from batteries on a shelf. I made an interactive toy/art display that would wobble randomly based on when and how I reconnected a wire. A few months later, I won the science fair by making a far more boring version on top of a construction toy to emulate one of those junkyard magnetic cranes.
Why do you think bacteria are important? Life as we know it wouldn’t exist without bacteria.
How do you define science? The process of getting better at making sure the things we think we know are true, and that the things that seem like they could be true, could be true.
How do you define health? It's better than being not sick (i.e. we judge it to be doing what it’s supposed to be doing).
What are you currently reading / listening to / watching? The Expanse (Central conceit—something called “protomolecule” which is a somewhat alive/somewhat tech particle that serves as the central driver of plot.)
Favorite microbiome-nurturing food? I like non-spicy kimchi.
Scientist, dead or alive, you’d like to have lunch with? Archimedes, if Ben Franklin doesn’t count as a scientist. I could have listed some of the more impactful scientists, but Ben Franklin just seems a lot more fun to eat with.
Microbiome perturbation you’re trying to give up? Fast food.
Favorite science joke or best mindgasm fact? What kind of vaccine should you turn to for money advice? A financial adPfizer
Fact most people don’t know about you: English is my second language.
